Amish Friendship Starter and Bread
STARTER
1/2 tsp. active dry yeast
2 tbsp. warm water
1 c. sugar
1 c. flour
1 c. milk
Day one:
Combine yeast, warm water and a pinch of sugar in a cup allow to stand
a few minutes until it begins to foam.
In a large glass or plastic bowl combine sugar, flour and milk with a
wooden or plastic spoon. Stir in yeast mixture. Do not use metal bowl, spoon,
or beater. Cover loosely and keep at room temperature.
Days two, three, and four: Stir once through each
day.
Day five: Add and stir:
1 c. sugar
1 c. flour
Then stir in:
1 c. milk
Days six, seven, eight, and nine: Stir once through
each day.
Day ten: Add and stir:
1 c. sugar
1 c. flour
Then stir in:
1 c. milk
Remove four cups of the mixture. Give one cup each
to three friends to use as a starter. Print out instructions (starting at
day 2) and bread recipe for each friend, be sure to tell them to pass on
a cup of their 10-day old starter to each of their three friends with instructions
and use one for themselves. Use one cup as your own starter.

AMISH FRIENDSHIP BREAD
About 1 c. of the tenth day Friendship starter
2/3 c. oil
2 c. flour
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. soda
2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
3 eggs
1 large apple, peeled, cored, and chopped
1/2 c. chopped nuts
PREHEAT OVEN TO 325 DEGREES
Beat together the ripened starter, the oil, flour, sugar, baking powder,
soda, cinnamon, salt, eggs, apple, and nuts.
Pour into two well-greased 9 x 5-inch loaf pans. Bake 40-45 minutes.
Makes two loaves.
