Newgrange is thought to be one of the oldest megalithic
structures in the world. It's perhaps
1000 years older than Stonehenge, built during the Neolithic period
ca. 2500-4000 B.C.
According to our guide, it was a burial site and may have been
used for ceremonial purposes.
On the shortest day of the year, the Winter Solstice, a shaft
of morning sunlight penetrates
a small opening over the doorway (the roof-box) into the heart
of the mound, illuminating
an inner room and passageway, where the walls are carved and sculpted
elaborately.
This place was incredible!
