The doorway to Newgrange.
The large stone is covered with spiral carvings, thought
to represent the seasons or time, but it's not known for sure.
All around the giant mound
at Newgrange are similar stones with elaborate carvings. The walls
and ceiling of the
interior room and passageway at Newgrange are lined with stones
covered with these
carvings as well, illuminated by sunlight for only 15 minutes
a year by a shaft of sunlight
that passes through the opening above the doorway on the morning
of the Winter Solstice.
